About Doug

This site is my own personal space to write about technology and new media news that I find most interesting and compelling. My name is Doug Toombs, and I’ve been a contributing editor for Windows IT Pro Magazine for about a decade, and have contributed as a co-author on a half-dozen or so print books, and have also authored and co-authored on a number of eBooks as well … the most recent being a sponsored publication from Microsoft which was my first sole authorship project - Keeping Your Business Safe from Attack: Monitoring and Managing Your Network Security (Windows IT Library). In my ten years of writing, I have received two awards from the American Society of Business Press Editors for my works.

Back in the “bubble” days, I also enjoyed the opportunity to be a speaker at leading tradeshows such as Comdex and CeBit America - getting a chance to share my knowledge and expertise on Microsoft platforms with very large audiences. It is unfortunate that these mega-shows didn’t survive the bubble crash.

In recent years, I’ve been working for a startup called Sevenspace - a “Selective IT Outsourcing” firm, specializing in the monitoring and management of mission critical applications and systems for our clients. Recently, our company was acquired by Sun Microsystems, so now I’m finding myself as a Windows guy in a Unix world … and trying to breathe a bit of new life and perspective into that company.

I suppose that this would be a good time to put in the standard disclaimer — that this is my own personal blog, on my own personal server, that I pay for with my own funds. In no way should anyone assume that anything I say here is officially endorsed or approved by my employer(s). Anything that I may want to say on the behalf of Windows IT Pro magazine, or on behalf of Sun, I will do on their own blogs - not here.

I can’t say I’ve got an exact focus for this site just yet - so I can’t promise what you’ll find. Generally, I plan to write about whatever strikes my fancy in technology. That might be anything from new gadget reviews, to topics relevant to Windows network administrators, to commentary on new media, the Internet, and the blogosphere in general.

However, I can tell you what you won’t likely find here - boring blog posts. I think there’s a lot of pressure that most bloggers feel to write frequently (as sites that update more frequently, tend to get a bit more attention from Google) and, therefore, end up pushing out a lot of content that is just … um … mediocre in quality? I don’t plan to do that here. You won’t find me blabbering on about what restaurant I ate at last night, what CD I’m listening to right now, or subjecting you to my latest vacation photos. Personally, I’d rather write less often — but on more interesting topics for you, my readers — than more often. So, be sure to put my RSS feed in your reader in order to keep up with our updates!
